Melissa grew up in California and after graduating with a BA in Communication Studies, she moved to Alaska in 2014 to serve for one year as an AmeriCorps VISTA at Food Bank of Alaska. It was in that year of service that she discovered her passion went beyond general communications, into the field of Development and Donor Relations. When her year of service came to an end, Melissa chose to stay in Alaska and continue following her passion—connecting people to causes they care most about. Melissa had worked for Bean's Cafe and Catholic Social Services, organizations who's missions she cares deeply for and continues to support, before coming to Camp Fire Alaska. Melissa is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and has served on the board for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Alaska Chapter since 2018, most recently serving as Board President in 2022.
Some of Melissa's favorite things include getting cozy with a good book and a cup of tea, going to brunch with friends, watching movies, kittens, family time, traveling, and spending time with her husband and daughter.
The Camp Fire Alaska main office operates on the ancestral land of the Dena’ina people. Camp Fire Alaska runs programing on the lands of the Athabascan, Yup’ik, Chup’ik, Sougpiaq, and Inupiaq peoples. We value and thank them for their current and historic commitment to and protection of this land. We pledge to assist, in partnership, in the environmental stewardship of these lands. We strive to learn more about the history of the Native peoples of Alaska and the historic trauma they have suffered. We commit to being an active ally through activities, actions, and organizational decisions and practices. We understand that this is a dynamic process through which our Land Acknowledgement practices, and statement will evolve as we receive feedback from tribal partners and acquire a deeper understanding of and from the Native peoples of Alaska.
